Marine and boat insurance

Marine and Boat Insurance

Marine insurance enquiries for boats, commercial craft and marine-related businesses, reviewed against use, waters and vessel details.

Start with the exposure

Understand the exposure before comparing terms.

Marine risks are highly dependent on the craft, navigation area, ownership, use, crew and mooring arrangements. We gather the relevant vessel and operating information before confirming whether a suitable insurer route is available.

OAK VIEW

Vessel-specific information is essential; marine cover should never be assumed from a generic business policy.

Cover to consider

Built from the risk outwards.

Availability and scope depend on insurer acceptance and the terms offered for your business.

01

Hull and machinery

Vessel construction, value, age, survey history, machinery and navigational limits shape the cover available.

02

Liability

Third-party, passenger or crew exposures depend on how the craft is used and the responsibilities accepted.

03

Equipment and business interruption

Marine equipment, tools, cargo or interruption may need to be addressed as separate elements of the programme.

Practical buying guidance

The vessel's use and operating area shape the risk

Private leisure use, chartering and other commercial operation can require different terms. Explain the vessel, ownership, use, skipper experience and operating area, including trips outside the usual cruising limits. A change in use should be agreed before it begins.

Hull, machinery, equipment and third-party liability need separate review. Policies can distinguish accidental damage from wear, deterioration or maintenance-related failure. Surveys, lay-up arrangements and security conditions may also affect insurer acceptance.

Tell Oak about moorings, storage ashore, trailers and equipment kept away from the boat. Check what happens during repair, transit or winter storage rather than assuming the same protection applies everywhere.

Compare the wording, not just the premium

Compare cruising limits, agreed or market-value terms, liability limits, machinery exclusions and survey conditions. Cover for one use does not confirm acceptance of charter or commercial operation.

Common questions

Useful answers before you approach the market.

What vessel details are needed?+

Insurers may request type, build, dimensions, value, engine, surveys, mooring, navigation limits and intended use.

Does one policy cover every type of use?+

No. Private, charter, commercial, racing and liveaboard use can have different requirements and must be declared.

Can marine business risks also be reviewed?+

Yes. Where relevant, we can consider liability, premises, equipment and other commercial exposures alongside the vessel enquiry.
