Motor trade insurance

Motor Trade Insurance

Insurance advice for eligible motor traders, including sales, servicing, repair, vehicle custody and road-risk exposures.

Start with the exposure

Understand the exposure before comparing terms.

Motor traders may handle customer vehicles, keep stock, carry out repairs and move vehicles on public roads. We establish which activities apply, who drives and how vehicles are stored before approaching insurers.

OAK VIEW

Vehicle use, custody and security controls are central to an accurate motor trade insurance review.

Cover to consider

Built from the risk outwards.

Availability and scope depend on insurer acceptance and the terms offered for your business.

01

Road risks

Cover for vehicles used in connection with the trade depends on declared drivers, vehicle use, trading radius and insurer terms.

02

Premises and customer vehicles

Buildings, tools, equipment and vehicles in your custody may need separate consideration and clear custody limits.

03

Liability and stock

Public, employers' and products liability, together with stock of vehicles, can be considered around the activities undertaken.

Practical buying guidance

Road risks and vehicles at the premises are separate questions

A vehicle dealer, repairer, valeter and recovery operator do not all present the same risk. Explain the trade, premises, vehicle types and the work performed. Driving customer vehicles on the road and keeping them at the premises can engage different cover sections and limits.

Tell Oak about vehicle values, demonstration drives, collection and delivery, trade plates and who is authorised to drive. High-value, specialist, modified or imported vehicles may need particular underwriting consideration.

Defective workmanship, supplied parts and liability for injury or damage are not the same as cover for the vehicle itself. A road-risks policy should not be assumed to include all premises, tools, stock, liability or interruption exposures.

Compare the wording, not just the premium

Check road-risk use, vehicle value limits, custody and control wording, driver restrictions and the premises sections included. Compare against the actual trade, not a generic fleet quotation.

Common questions

Useful answers before you approach the market.

Can road risks and premises cover be combined?+

Some insurers offer combined motor trade arrangements; others separate them. The comparison needs to check both scope and conditions.

Are customer vehicles in my care covered?+

That depends on the policy wording, declared activities, custody limits and required security. It should be confirmed before accepting vehicles.

What driver information is needed?+

Insurers commonly ask about driver age, experience, convictions, claims and whether vehicles are used personally or only for the business.
